Used transmissions: what to confirm before the pallet leaves
If the engine is coming out, this is often next. Match the unit to the vehicle the same way you match a long block — code first, photo last.
A no-move, a flare on the 2–3, or a converter that already cooked the fluid is often a transmission, not an engine. Ordering both “while we’re in there” is smart only when the diagnosis says so.
Fitment notes shops actually use
- Bellhousing bolt pattern and starter location.
- 8-speed vs 6-speed vs CVT — the shifter and TCM are not interchangeable.
- 4x4 output and transfer-case clocking.
- Whether the quote is a used takeout or a reman with new clutches and seals.
