Audi vehicle history

Get a Audi vehicle history report.

A4s and Q5s are only a deal when the timing chain, the cooling system, and the service stamps are in the file. An Audi report is that file, plus the accidents the paint is hiding.

What a Audi report is for

Used Audis depreciate into tempting prices and then invoice their owners for chain tensioners, water pumps, and ignored DSG service. The buyers who do well are the ones who read the shop history before they fall for the interior.

Enter the VIN or the plate. You get ownership, accidents, service records that shops and DMVs filed, title brands, odometer checks, open recalls, and a theft screen. If a source has nothing, the report says so.

Already own it and need a drivetrain part? Shop Audi parts.

  1. 01Ownership and useA string of short owners usually means each one met a repair. One owner with a specialist is the Audi people mean when they say they love these cars.
  2. 02Accidents and structureQuattro cars get repaired to a high standard or to a low one. Structural notes and airbags tell you which, better than panel gaps do at dusk.
  3. 03Service fileTiming-chain or tensioner work, water pump, carbon cleaning, DSG or transmission fluid, and regular oil. Missing any of those on a turbo four is the risk.
  4. 04MileageHighway miles with yearly oil changes beat a garaged car with a five-year gap. Read the dates, not just the total.
  5. 05RecallsAirbag and various component campaigns. An open recall means it has been away from a dealer.

Models

Audis people run before they buy

The lookup is the same. The reason you run it changes with the model.

  • Audi A4

2.0T chain and oil use. The core used Audi.

  • Audi Q5

Same engines, more weight. Service and accidents.

  • Audi A6

Higher repair costs. Records matter more than miles.

  • Audi Q7

Air suspension and prior collision repairs.

  • Audi A3

Entry car. DSG service and the 2.0T story.

Buying guide

How to read a used Audi

Worth a closer look

  • Tensioner or chain work on early 2.0T years

The updated tensioner, already installed, with miles afterward.

  • DSG service on the dual-clutch cars

Fluid and filter intervals that were actually kept. These gearboxes are fine when serviced and expensive when they are not.

  • Cooling system in the last few years

Water pump and thermostat are wear items. Recent work is a gift.

Price it in, or leave

  • Chain noise in the notes

A rattle on start that was diagnosed and not repaired is close to an engine-out job.

  • No invoices after year four

That is when oil consumption, leaks, and the cooling system start asking to be paid.

  • Q7 air suspension faults

A recorded fault and a sale price that ignores it.

Once the report is in your hands

Read the file in this order.

  1. 01OwnersCount them, then read how long each one kept the car and whether it was personal, fleet, or rental.
  2. 02AccidentsSeverity, airbags, and frame or unibody notes. A repaired car with later service is a different buy than a gap right after a crash.
  3. 03ServiceRegular oil changes, and the make-specific jobs further down this page. A missing line means no record reached us.
  4. 04OdometerReadings should climb. A stall, a drop, or a number that is too low for the owners is the line to question.
  5. 05RecallsOpen campaigns are unfinished work. Completed ones show the car made it back to a dealer.

Known issues

What to watch on a used Audi

These are patterns buyers run into. They are not a verdict on every car. The report shows what was filed. A shop still has to see the rest.

  • 2.0T timing chain tensioner

Earlier EA888 2.0T engines could fail a chain tensioner and jump timing, especially on cold starts.

    On the report
Tensioner, chain, or engine repairs. Cold-start rattle complaints.
    Still check in person
Have someone start it while you listen at the chain cover. A rattle that lasts a few seconds is the warning.
  • Oil consumption and carbon

Direct-injected turbo fours can use oil and build carbon on the intake valves.

    On the report
Pistons, oil-consumption complaints, and carbon or walnut-blast services.
    Still check in person
Check the oil. A rough idle with no codes yet can be carbon.
  • Water pump and thermostat

Plastic housings leak coolant as these cars age.

    On the report
    Pump, thermostat, and low-coolant visits.
    Still check in person
Look for crusty pink residue at the pump and a coolant level below the mark.

How it works

Three steps, then you have the file

  1. 01

    Enter the VIN or plate

The VIN is on the dash (driver’s side), the driver’s door jamb, or the title. A plate works with the state that issued it.

  2. 02

    Pick a package

One report, a pack of five, or a monthly plan for dealers. We confirm the vehicle and send a secure payment link.

  3. 03

    Read it before you buy

The report lands by email and stays online so you can review, download, or print it while you’re standing next to the car.

What does an Audi vehicle history report show?+

Ownership, accidents, reported service, title brands, odometer readings, recalls, and theft checks for that VIN.

Will it show timing-chain work on an A4?+

If a dealer or shop submitted the repair, yes. A rattle that has never been diagnosed will not be in the file yet.

How do I read the service section?+

Look for oil changes at least yearly, DSG service where the car has one, and cooling-system or chain work on the 2.0T. A gap of several years is the red flag.

Is a clean title enough?+

A clean title rules out salvage and flood brands. It does not rule out a deferred chain tensioner. Read the service lines too.
