Jeep Cherokee PTU Recalls: Check the VIN Before Buying a Transfer Case

Jeep

A VIN-first guide to Jeep Cherokee PTU recalls, replacement fitment, part-number limits and the checks to make before ordering.

A Jeep Cherokee PTU should be selected by VIN, drivetrain configuration, installed unit identification and current recall status—not by model year alone. Multiple federal recalls cover different groups of 2014–2023 Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed power transfer unit, and overlapping years do not mean the assemblies interchange.

What is the PTU on a Jeep Cherokee?

On four-wheel-drive Cherokee models, the power transfer unit (PTU) routes transmission torque into the driveline that can power the rear axle. Sellers may loosely call it a transfer case, but “PTU” is the more precise component name in Jeep and NHTSA documents.

That distinction matters when searching for a replacement. Start with the vehicle’s 17-character VIN, which you can confirm with the iBid Auto VIN decoder, and verify that the vehicle actually has the two-speed PTU involved in the relevant campaign.

Which Jeep Cherokee years have PTU recalls?

A model year is only a screening clue. Recall eligibility is determined by VIN and production records.

  • 2014–2017: NHTSA campaign 20V-343, FCA campaign W47, covers certain Cherokees with a two-speed PTU. NHTSA says movement between the differential input splines and transmission output shaft can wear spline teeth and cause loss of engagement.
  • 2016–2017: NHTSA campaign 23V-302, FCA campaign 45A, covers an additional population built from September 3, 2015 through September 23, 2016. Its filing lists several PTU part numbers, but those numbers are recall-scope data—not an interchange chart.
  • 2017–2019: NHTSA campaign 25V-011, FCA campaign 01C, concerns certain two-speed PTUs built with an improperly seated input-shaft snap ring. FCA’s January 15, 2026 filing says this can lead to range-sleeve, spline or range-fork damage.
  • 2019–2023: NHTSA campaign 26V-290, FCA campaign 40D, concerns certain two-speed PTUs that may fail internally. The September 10, 2026 filing identifies the suspect production period as December 12, 2018 through February 24, 2023.

These ranges come from the official 20V-343 acknowledgment, 23V-302 filing, updated 25V-011 filing and 26V-290 filing. Check the VIN with Jeep or NHTSA for the current campaign and remedy status before ordering parts.

Why a recall software update is not the same as a PTU replacement

The earlier W47 and 45A documents describe software intended to preserve propulsion through rear-wheel drive and apply the electric parking brake if an input-spline failure is detected. That safety strategy does not prove that a worn PTU is mechanically healthy.

The updated 01C filing describes software that monitors for excessive PTU wear and calls for PTU replacement when failure is confirmed. The 40D filing likewise describes module reprogramming followed by PTU replacement if needed. Because campaign procedures and availability can change, use the VIN-specific instructions from an authorized dealer or NHTSA rather than assuming a replacement is automatically required—or that software alone resolves an existing mechanical failure.

Replacement PTU fitment checklist

Before using the auto-parts search, collect:

  1. The complete VIN and exact model year.
  2. The vehicle build date from the certification label.
  3. Four-wheel-drive system and whether the vehicle has the two-speed PTU.
  4. Engine and transmission configuration.
  5. The full number and revision suffix on the installed PTU label or casting.
  6. Connector locations, mounting points, output flanges and actuator configuration.
  7. Any stored diagnostic trouble codes plus the exact warning message.
  8. Open and completed recall information for that VIN.
  9. Written confirmation of interchange from the supplier or installer.

Do not assume two units interchange because their housings look alike or because both appear in one recall filing. A suffix change may represent a revision, and recall documents define affected populations rather than installation compatibility.

What should be inspected before installation?

Ask the installer to examine the replacement assembly and connected driveline components for cracked mounting points, damaged connectors, contaminated or leaking lubricant, input and output spline damage, and abnormal shaft play. The surrounding transmission output, driveshaft interfaces and mounts should also be checked so an external problem is not carried into the replacement.

Installation should follow the vehicle-specific service procedure, including specified fluid, fastener torque, programming and relearn steps. Those details can vary with the VIN and installed hardware.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a Cherokee PTU using the recall part-number list?

No. A number in a Part 573 filing identifies a component involved in that campaign; it does not establish that every listed revision fits every vehicle in the year range. Match the VIN and original unit, then confirm interchange.

Does a “Service 4WD” message prove the PTU has failed?

No. The 25V-011 and 26V-290 filings say that message, noise, vibration or a change in drive quality may occur, but none is a stand-alone diagnosis. Scan the correct modules and inspect the driveline before buying a replacement.

Is every 2014–2023 Cherokee included?

No. The recalls cover specific VIN populations, generally tied to two-speed PTUs and defined production records. Similar vehicles may have a different PTU or no PTU at all.

What information should I send with a parts request?

Provide the VIN, build date, drivetrain details, original PTU number and suffix, connector and flange photos, and diagnostic findings. A complete parts quote request gives the supplier a stronger basis for checking fitment.
